While ANY day is a GOOD day to perform a random act of kindness, next week is Random Acts of Kindness Week.
Not sure what to do for a random act of kindness? Here are some ideas:
- Buy a cup of coffee for the customer behind you in line.
- Bring doughnuts or a desert to work.
- Cook a meal or do a load of laundry for a friend who just had a baby or is going through a difficult time.
- If you walk by a car with an expired parking meter, put a quarter in it.
- Each time you get a new item of clothing, donate something you don't wear anymore to charity.
- Email or write a letter to a former teacher who made a difference in your life.
- Compliment someone to their boss.
- Leave a server a nice tip for doing an exceptional job.
- Forgive someone, and never bring up the issue again.
- Let someone in to your lane. They are probably in just as much of a hurry as you.
- Smile at someone, just because.
Here is a recent act of kindness that I was lucky to experience:
I was a recipient of a random act of kindness last month. After
assisting a family at a house fire I stopped at a small mom and pop gas station
in Pleasant Hill, MO to use the restroom and get a soft drink. When I tried to
pay for my purchase the cashier wouldn’t let me. She said “thank you for what
you do for the community and the drink’s on us” (I am a Disaster Assessment Technician for the Red Cross and was still wearing my Red
Cross gear). It’s not the free drink I will remember but the “thank you”. The
cashier did this in front of 6 other customers in the store. A small gesture
like that can make a difference...
The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation wants to know what you are doing for Random Acts of Kindness Week. Tell them by using hash tag #RAKWeek2015 on your social media posts so they can find them and they will feature favorites they choose on their social media channels. Will yours be chosen?
